Sonny Rollins is a legendary jazz tenor saxophonist, whose long, prolific career began at the age of eleven. He received his first saxophone when he was thirteen, and was playing with piano legend Thelonious Monk before reaching the age of twenty. Rollins started as a pianist, changed to alto saxophone, and finally switched to tenor. During his high-school years, he played in a band with other future jazz legends Jackie McLean and Kenny Drew. He was first recorded in 1949 with Babs Gonzales – in the same year he recorded with J. J. Johnson and Bud Powell. In his recordings throughout the next five years, he played with performers such as Miles Davis, Charlie Parker and Thelonious Monk. A seventy year career has spawned over sixty albums as a leader and several compositions, including ""St. Thomas,"" ""Oleo,"" ""Doxy,"" ""Pent-Up House,"" and ""Airegin,"" all which have become jazz staples. Rollins is still touring and recording today, having outlived most of his contemporaries such as John Coltrane, Miles Davis, Max Roach, and Art Blakey, all performers with whom he recorded. He has been elected to the Down Beat Jazz Hall of Fame, and honored with a Grammy Award for Lifetime Achievement..
