Thayer started his football career in high school and went on to play for the Notre Dame Fighting Irish football team while studying at the Notre Dame University. He went on to be drafted by the Chicago Bears but was also selected to play for the USFLs Chicago Blitz which is where he played for a year before eventually moving on to play for the Bears a few years later.
