Kwame Onwuachi is an American-Nigerian chef based in Washington, D.C. He was recently featured in Food & Wine magazine as one of it’s Best New Chefs and he has been a contestant on the series “Top Chef”. Onwuachi started his career in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, where he became the head chef on a boat serving crews that were cleaning up the Deepwater Horizon oil spill. He ended up moved back to New York City and waited tables at Tom Colicchio’s Craft before opening his own business, Onwuachi’s Coterie Catering. He then enrolled at The Culinary Institute of America where he worked an externship at Per Se. After graduating, he worked as a line cook at Eleven Madison Park. Shortly after, he opened his own restaurant, Shaw Bijou, which served a 13-course tasting menu. After a few months, he was hired to open a restaurant which he named Kith and Kin which has since received positive reviews from the Washington Post and the Michelin Guide. Onwuachi has published a memoir, “Notes from a Young Black Chef”, and has been named Rising Star Chef of the Year at the James Beard Awards..
