Melissa Stockwell is an American War Hero and a Paralympic Medalist. She was born in Grand Haven, Michigan, and joined the ROTC at the University of Colorado. After the September 11, 2001 attack, Stockwell was assigned to the 1st Cavalry Division at Fort Hood, Texas, and after a few years, was deployed to Iraq. While in the Iraq War, Stockwell was the first female soldier to lose a limb after losing her left leg with a roadside bomb exploded. Stockwell went on to be awarded the Purple Heart and Bronze Star for her service and since retiring from the military, she has gone on to work as a prosthetist and has also served on the board of directors of the Wounded Warrior Project. Stockwell has previously been the first Iraq veteran chosen for the Paralympics and she has competed in three swimming events at the Summer Paralympics where she finished in six, fifth, and fourth. After competing in the Paralympic games, Stockwell went on to represent the United States at the ITU Triathlon World Championships where she went on to win three gold medals, a silver medal, and a bronze medal. Stockwell has had a documentary film released about her story titled, “Warrior Champions: From Baghdad to Beijing.”.
