Patrisse Cullors is an American artist and activist who is the co-founder of the Black Lives Matter movement. Cullors was born in Los Angeles, California, and ever since a young age she was an activist and joined the Bus Riders Union as a teenager, a civil rights social movement organization that calls out the racial discrimination policies of the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority. Cullors has gone on to earn her degree in religion and philosophy from UCLA and has been a teacher at the Otis College of Art and Design and also teaches social justice and community organizing at Prescott College. Cullors founded the Black Lives Matter movement alongside Alicia Garza and Opal Tometi. The three began the movement over frustration over the shooting of Trayvon Martin. They began the movement with the hashtag ‘#BlackLivesMatter’ in a Facebook post and the hashtag ended up starting the movement that is still going strong on social media today. Cullors is also an activist for prison abolition and has served as the executive director of the Coalition to End Sheriff Violence in L.A. Jails. She has also co-founded Dignity and Power Now and has been a board member of the Ella Baker Center for Human Rights. Cullors has also published the book “When They Call You a Terrorist: A Black Lives Matter Memoir.”.
