Jeanne Celestine Lakin is an award-winning author and founder of One Million Orphans. Lakin’s story is that of heartbreak as she was a Rwandan Genocide survivor who overcame a childhood of genocide, abuse, and orphanhood. Lakin was forced to run from her home after the Rwandan government tried to eliminate the entire Tutsi ethnic group. Over the course of about 100 days, Lakin ran for her home with her little sisters where they hid in forests, swamps, and bushes. After finally finding her way out, she had to deal with the heartbreak of learning almost all of her relatives didn’t make it out of Tutsi. Lakin went on to begin learning in the United States at only 14 years old where she was unfamiliar with the English language and had to deal with her PTSD from the genocide. Lakin has gone on to earn her high school degree, her B.A. in International Relations and Affairs from Eastern Washington University and her M.A. in Public administration from Eastern Washington University. Lakin has also published her memoir, “A Voice in the Darkness: Memoir of a Rwandan Genocide Survivor.” Through her work with One Million Orphans, Lakin raises money to provide care to orphans all over the world.
