Vonetta Flowers is an American bobsledder from Helena, Alabama who is best known for being the 1st person of African descent to win a Gold medal in the Winter Olympics. Flowers has been athletic since a young age and while in elementary school, Coach DeWitt Thomas went to Flowers’ school looking to recruit the fastest children for the Alabama Striders and found Flowers to be the fastest runner in the school. Flowers began training and over the years won nearly every race she entered in. Although she was originally a star sprinter and long jumper while studying at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, along the way, Flowers turned to bobsledding where she exceled almost immediately. While at the University of Alabama, Flowers had earned 35 conference titles and victories and was their first seven-time All-American. After finding she exceled at bobsledding, Flowers along with Jill Bakken, won the gold medal in the Winter Olympics at Salt Lake City. Since earning the gold medal, Flowers has also played in the World Championships in Konigssee, where she earned bronze. She has since gone on to be elected into the Alabama Sports Hall of Fame..
