Shaw was born in Flowery Branch, Georgia, and he began his career playing high school football where he was considered a three star recruit and went on to play college football for South Carolina. During his time playing college football, Shaw was named the SEC’s offensive player of the week, played in the NFLPA Collegiate Bowl, and the Capital One Bowl, the latter of which he was voted the game’s MVP. Shaw went on to go undrafted and was then signed as a free agent for the Cleveland Browns. Shaw played with the Browns for a year where he was a starter for a game against the Baltimore Ravens and was later injured and released from the Browns before being claimed off waivers by the Chicago Bears. Shaw had to cut his NFL career short due to injuries and then was the tight ends coach at Furman University although he resigned due to other commitments before coaching in season..
