Bruce was born in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, and he began his career playing football in high school where he was an All-County selection and led his team to the Florida State 4-A Championships. Bruce went on to play college football at Memphis State University where he became the first wide receiver in the history to post a 1,000-yard receiving season. He went on to earn his degree in physical education and has since been inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame, making him the only football player that played at Memphis State University to earn that accomplishment.
