Over the course of his career, McMackin has worked for numerous universities as a defensive backs coach, line backers coach, and defensive coordinator. Various schools that McMackin has worked for include Idaho, San Jose State, Stanford, Utah, Miami, Hawaii, and Texas Tech. McMackin has also been head coach for Oregon Tech and University of Hawaii.
