Through his work in economics, Sargent is a specialist in marcoeconomics, monetary economics, and time series econometrics. Sargent was born in Pasadena, California, and he earned his B.A. from the University of California, Berkley, before earning his Ph.D. from Harvard University. He first served in the U.S. Army as a first lieutenant, and then captain, before he began his career as a teacher.
