Dounia Tazi, known just as Dounia, is a Moroccan-American singer-songwriter, model and activist who rose to fame first as an Instagram model who spread activism and body-positivity. Dounia was sent to Morocco as a baby while her mother worked in Queens, New York. When she was eight years old she moved to Queens and during this time, taught herself how to speak and read English through local books. While growing up, she also found her love for playing the guitar although her family wouldn’t let her play music. While in high school, Dounia began writing and recording her own music and released a song about a boy she dated which she uploaded through SoundCloud. During this time she also started her Instagram account where she modeled her outfits she’d find at thrift stores. This led her to be a part of a Forever 21 campaign and she then modeled for Sephora and Refinery29, which led her to gain hundreds of thousands of followers. She used her modeling to grow her music and shortly after she released her debut EP, “Intro To.” Since then, Dounia has released two more EPs “The Avant-Garden” and “NOT GOOD FOR THE EGO” before releasing her debut studio album, “The Scandal.” Some of her most popular songs include “Rich Girl Mood” which has over 6.5 million streams on Spotify, “take a number,” and “DELIGHTFUL.”.
