Rick Welts is a sports executive and the Golden State Warriors’ advisor. He was previously the president and the CEO for the Phoenix Sun from 2002 until 2011. In the late 1990’s, Rick was the third-highest-ranking official for the NBA, while serving as executive video president and SMO. Rick was born in Seattle and attended the University of Washington, graduated from the Delta Chi fraternity. While in Seattle, he worked for the Seattle SuperSonics holding a variety of different jobs, starting as a ballboy and then working his way up to public relations in the same season that the SuperSonics won their only NBA Championship in the late 70s. Rick worked at the NBA league offices for nearly twenty years, further working his way up to the position of executive vice president and chief marketing officer and president of NBA Properties. Rick holds the distinction of creating the NBA All-Star Weekend idea back in the 80s and the marketing campaign for the “Dream Team” during the Barcelona Olympics in 1992. Rick is also the first openly gay man to hold these high positions for the NBA.
