Elizabeth Ashburn Duke, an American bank executive who was a member of the Federal Reserve Board of Governors from 2008 to 2013, was born on July 23, 1952. Duke was approved by the Senate to complete a term that was set to expire on January 31, 2012. She was the board's seventh female appointment. She made her departure from the board public in July 2013. After serving as vice-chair since 12 October 2016, she was elected chair of the Wells Fargo board of directors on 1 January 2018. Duke joined the Bank of Virginia Beach in 1977 as a vice president and chief financial officer. She attended Old Dominion University on a part-time basis while holding a full-time job and graduated with an MBA in 1983. In 1985, she was promoted to vice president and chief financial officer at the Bank of Tidewater. In 1987, she was elected president; in 1991, she was named CEO. In 1998, she was chosen to serve on the board of the Federal Reserve Bank of Richmond, and in 1999, she was chosen to lead the Virginia Bankers Association. Up until SouthTrust bought Bank of Tidewater in 2001, Duke served as the institution's president and CEO. She was promoted to executive vice president for community bank growth at SouthTrust. Duke was still an executive vice president when Wachovia acquired SouthTrust in 2004 and was in charge of the merger project office. She was also chosen as the American Bankers Association's chairman for the 2004–2005 fiscal year. She was appointed chief operational officer and senior executive vice president of TowneBank in 2005. On May 15, 2007, President George W. Bush proposed her for the Federal Reserve Board of Governors. Duke announced her departure from the Fed board on July 11, 2013, effective as of August 31. In October 2016, Duke was chosen as vice chair of the board of directors at Wells Fargo.
