Neil Walker, a second-generation Major League Baseball player and Silver Slugger Award winner, played second base for the New York Mets. He was chosen by the Pittsburgh Pirates in the first round of the MLB Draft and after three minor league seasons, he was ranked No. 3 in the Pirates' organization and in Baseball America's Top 100 Prospects. He had a five-hit game, making him the first Pirates rookie to do so in nearly 20 years. Walker's eighteen-game hitting streak in his first full MLB season was the longest by any Pirate batter that year and the longest by a Pirate rookie in almost forty years.
He tied for third place in the NL with 54 RBIs after the All-Star Break. On both the Topps Major League Rookie All-Star Team and Baseball America's All-Rookie Team, he was selected as the second baseman. Walker went on to become one of just two Pirates players to smash a grand slam on opening day and established a new mark for the most home runs a second baseman could hit in a season with twenty. He also took part in a play that allowed the Pirates to turn a 4-5-4 triple play, becoming the first MLB club to do it.
