LaRussell Thomas also started Good Compenny, a group that helps Bay Area musicians who are just starting out get their names out there. LaRussell was born and reared in the northern Vallejo neighborhood of California, a place known for its abundance of independent hip-hop artists. He started rapping when he was eight years old, but his early education did not inspire him. He then transferred to Vallejo's Peoples' High School, where he fared much better. In 2017, he started Good Compenny and put out more songs under the name Tota, like "6am in Vallejo," which is about his own life, and "Cyntoia Brown," which is about unfairness. The Field Effect, which came out in January 2018, was his first "real" work, and the response to it made him want to keep going. After putting out the long "Never Forget Who You Are" album in July, he mostly just put out freestyle raps over his own songs in 2019 and 2020. His debut album as LaRussell, "Silence Won't Save You," was published in June 2020. Similar to the Berlin-based Colors Show, Good Compenny debuted its own live performance video channel that December. LaRussell did "Do That Little Dance" for the first video, which promoted "The Field Effect, Vol. 2," which came out at the same time.
