Dua Saleh's first musical attempt was shared online as a fun exercise to share with friends. The Twin Cities scene noticed almost immediately. One of them was the producer Psymun (Future, Young Thug, Juice WRLD, Corbin fka Spooky Black), of whom Saleh was a fan but was unaware that they both came from the same place. They connected well and Psymun ended up executive producing Nur. The bouncy bop "Kickflip," which Saleh created while staring out their window after becoming restless at three in the morning with a melody that demanded to be heard, is included on the EP. The impressionistic song "Albany" transforms a painful recollection of loneliness and sadness into uplifting vocal harmonies that eventually take on a hymnal feel.
The fluidity of Dua Saleh's sound, form and self-presentation is what gives them their lively quality. Their vocal range is flexible, able to switch at a moment's notice between an exquisite purr and an unadorned, guttural growl. While occasionally dreamy, their poetry most frequently probes the soul, piercing deeply with a poet's precision and revealing the wounds that have not healed. Saleh doesn't so much challenge conventional categorizations as they transcend them with a life that has been mapped over continents and conflicts and an early age spent fighting back against myopia and orthodoxy. Their music blurs the lines between the global, local, personal and political in discussion with their African ancestry and the future potential of the diaspora..
