Tommy Genesis is a multidisciplinary artist who has embraced music, fashion and visual art as means of creative expression. She describes herself as a "fetish rapper" whose lyrics challenge conventional ideas of sex and sexuality. Genesis first gained widespread recognition with her debut album, Tommy Genesis, which included a Charli XCX remix of her song "100 Bad." Before releasing her sophomore album, Goldilocks X, she continued to refine her daring, emotionally dramatic sound by appearing as a guest on tracks like Dakari, Lil West and JPEGMAFIA.
Genesis is a Vancouver native with Swedish and Tamil ancestry. She studied filmmaking while she was in art school, but she grew dissatisfied with the limitations of the medium and was anxious to try something new.
She took an audio recording and production course as part of the film program and her improved abilities inspired her to take up music again. Before attempting to break into the hip-hop scene with the duo Moan, she performed with a few local punk rock bands. Initally recording as a part of a project named G3NESIS, Genesis began recording raps accompanied by sparse but atmospheric sound. Over time, some of her material found its way to Father, the creator of the independent rap label Awful Records, situated in Atlanta.
She released several non-album singles, including "I'm Yours" and "Bricks" with Charli XCX, during the course of the following year, in addition to guest appearances on songs by Dakari and Lil West. All of this culminated in the release of Genesis' second studio album, Goldilocks X and had production by The Martinez Brothers, Good Times Ahead, Stelios and Charlie Heat..
