Before making his debut in the European Formula Two Championship in 1977, Daly developed his racing abilities in the Irish Formula Ford Championship. He then demonstrated his prowess in Formula One and Formula Two, winning the Formula Two championship in each of the following two seasons. Daly primarily focused on Formula One from 1980 to 1982. His best year was 1980, when he achieved two fourth-place finishes and finished 11th in the Drivers' Championship. The Monaco Grand Prix, where he was involved in a catastrophic collision in 1980 and came very close to winning in 1982, provided him with some of his most memorable memories in Formula One.
Daly continued to leave his imprint on the racing world when he switched to the CART series in 1982. With the exception of 1986, he competed in all 66 CART events, including every Indianapolis 500 from 1983 to 1989. He finished in the top ten 21 times during his CART career and earned a podium finish in 1987 at Milwaukee by taking third. His career, however, nearly came to an end in September 1984 at Michigan International Speedway when he was involved in a serious crash during the CART PPG Detroit News Grand Prix 200. Daly showed his strength and resolve to recover despite suffering numerous wounds, including fractures, burns, and internal bleeding.
Daly was successful outside of open-wheel competition. Driving a Nissan GTP ZX-Turbo, he succeeded in endurance racing and won the prestigious 12 Hours of Sebring in 1990 and 1991.
