Few bands could combine the high gloss of sophisticated, jazz-influenced pop with the carefree breeziness of the developing new wave as effectively as Haircut 100 in the first half of the 1980's. They were able to combine cheerful vocals, sax solos, skittering guitars, funky breakdowns and horn parts to create a sound that quickly drew in listeners. Even a challenging second album, Paint and Paint, couldn't ruin the group's reputation and really deserved a better reaction. The group's hit "Love Plus One" and album Pelican West are considered touchstones for that era. Even though the band disbanded after only five years, "Love Plus One" endured indelibly in nostalgic playlists and cheery collections, cementing their status as pop savants.
Over the years, Haircut 100 regrouped a few occasions, most notably for the VH1 program Bands Reunited. They also appeared together for a Heyward solo performance. When they performed and a rumor surfaced suggesting that new music may be in the works, a more extensive re-formation appeared to be in the cards, but nothing happened, and the band resumed its dormancy. It includes a live concert taped at the Hammersmith Odeon as well as the previously unseen sessions for the unfinished second album.
