Spatola was a four-year starter for the basketball team at the United States Military Academy in West Point where he graduated. He was selected for both the All-Freshman and All-Patriot League teams. With 1,543 career points, he is the sixth-most prolific scorer in Academy history and ranks 15th in Patriot League history. Spatola led the team in scoring for three consecutive seasons, was the Patriot League's top scorer and holds the school's all-time free-throw shooting record. He participated in 111 games throughout his career, which places him third all-time at West Point and served as team captain during his senior year.
Spatola joined the US Army as an officer after earning a degree in English with a minor in environmental engineering. Prior to his five years of active duty in the Army, he was a great player on the All-Army and All-Armed Forces basketball teams and worked as a graduate assistant coach for the Army men's basketball team. He performed a variety of jobs throughout his active period, including Executive Officer and Company Commander. Spatola received the Army Commendation Medal for outstanding performance as a Company Commander and the Joint Service Commendation Medal for outstanding combat performance during a tour in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom after being promoted to the rank of captain.
Spatola was a member of the Duke men's basketball coaching staff from the time he left the Army until Mike Krzyzewski hired him. During that time, the Blue Devils won four ACC tournament crowns and a national championship.
