Black Noise, Billy Allen + The Pollies' debut album, is a beast of a Southern engine. Over the course of its eleven songs, it deftly veers between grunge, funk, gospel, and soul while chugging along a classic rock chassis. Black Noise is a genre-defying haymaker that hits, from the thunderous opening tune—a liberated anthem of self-worth called "All of Me"—to the profoundly eerie closing track, the wurlitzer-fueled "Go on Without Them."
Black Noise, which got its name from a hypothetical sound bomb that might wipe out entire towns, was composed largely during the epidemic. It started out as voice memos between Burgess and Allen.
As the lockdown took hold, the musicians developed into a kind of mini-community among themselves. Voice memos eventually led to composition sessions in Jay's garage, which in turn led to full band rehearsals in Studio 144, Jay's sanctuary in Greenhill, Alabama. When it came time to record the album, they called in their longtime friend and Grammy Award-winning musician Ben Tanner for engineering and production duties. The band was introduced to Sun Drop Sound in Florence by Tanner, who used to be the keys player for Alabama Shakes and co-owner of SingleLock Records. With the exception of a brief overdub segment, the album was entirely recorded live, without a click, and in three takes or fewer for each song because the band was so well-honed.
