Their merging of top 40 pop music with punk and new wave spanned musical genres in a way that had never been done before. Chrissie Hynde and the rest of the band were able to establish a name for themselves in the United States as well as the United Kingdom with the assistance of edgy hits such as "Brass in Pocket" and "Kid." The Pretenders were primarily a vehicle for Hynde's singing and songwriting, but the skill of guitarist James Honeyman-Scott contributed a component to the band's music that has persisted to this day. Even after he passed away from an overdose of drugs, bands continued to be affected by his suspended chords, effects pedals, and syncopated rhythms for twenty years. Shortly after the death of Honeyman-Scott, bassist Pete Farndon also passed away as a result of an accidental drug overdose. However, Hynde and drummer Martin Chambers moved on with new members, and The Pretenders continued to release songs throughout the 1980s and 1990s.
