In joining NBC in 1974, Simpson became the first African-American woman to anchor on a major network newscast. She went on to became the first minority woman to moderate a presidential debate - the 1992 debate between George H. W. Bush, Bill Clinton, and Ross Perot in 1992. She received the Journalist of the Year Award from the National Associations of Black Journalists the same year. Since leaving ABC, she has taught journalism at Emerson College in Boston. She is on the Advisory Council at the International Women's Media Foundation and established the Carole Simpson Scholarship for minority students while a member of the Radio Television Digital News Association.
