Carr began his illustrious career as a professional basketball player. Following graduation, he was selected in the first round by the National Basketball Association's Kansas City Kings and the American Basketball Association's Kentucky Colonels. He joined the Israel Sabras in the European Pro Basketball League the next season, and after leading his club to the title, he was voted MVP. Carr was a member of the ABA All-Rookie squad while playing for the Spirits of St. Louis. He played for the Detroit Pistons when the ABA and NBA combined, and after leading the club in scoring, he was chosen for the All-Defense second team.
Ever since he began playing professionally, Carr has been steadfast in his dedication to give back to the community. For his community service, he has won various honors, including the President's Citation Award for the "M.L. Carr Stand Tall Against Drugs Program," the Dr. Martin Luther King Image Award, the Camille Cosby Award, the President's Citation Award, and an Honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters from Salem State College, to mention a few. In addition, he founded the John Henry Carr Alzheimer's and Aging Foundation and the M.L. Carr Scholarship Fund at Guilford College.
Carr has held positions on a number of boards, such as Guilford College, New Balance Athletic Shoe, Inc., and Channel 7/Boston, a CBS affiliate. He is currently employed at New Technology Ventures and dSide Technologies..
