The group’s musical style is intricate and cinematic. The New York Times described their debut album, The Purge, as “informed as much by the torqued jazz-rock of the early 1970s as by the dark ambient and drum ‘n’ bass music of the early ‘90s, while still pursuing an indeterminacy of style.” Skerik is known as a member of the bands Critters Buggin and Garage Á Trois, Deitch for his work with Lettuce, and Medeski for his role in Medeski Martin & Wood. All of these bands play jam-band style music, with an emphasis on funk and soul. Skerik is recognized for his influence on saxophonics, and was named “Northwest Jazz Instrumentalist of the Year” at the Earshot Jazz Golden Ear Awards. Medeski is known as a veteran of New York’s 1990s avant-garde jazz scene and was an inaugural member of the Independent Music Awards’ judging panel to support independent artists.
