Marlen was raised in a household that was passionate about boxing and was born in Houston, Texas. She first got into the ring when she began watching her younger brother while he worked out at the neighborhood gym. Marlen was soon pleading with her dad and the trainer at the gym to allow her to give the sport a go. After some hesitation, they agreed as long as she behaved herself in class. Marlen fulfilled her obligations, and by the time she graduated with a 4.6 GPA in her senior year, she had been named class president. Despite having won two U.S. National Championships in Women's Boxing and taken home a bronze medal in the World Championships, Marlen was prepared to give up boxing and attend Rice University, where she had been accepted.
Marlen Esparza won the bronze in the women's boxing debut at the London Olympic Games. After winning the medal, Marlen recognized that she wasn't completely done with boxing, despite her initial plan to abandon the sport after the Olympics.
Marlen has won the title for three years, extending her winning streak at the U.S. National Championship. Additionally, Marlen won her first-ever gold medal at the Women's World Championships.
