The band releaed their self-titled debut album, which was praised by music critics as being a beautiful balance of country and roots-type pop. The band released a second album entitled Sad Songs for Dirty Lovers, which earned the titled of Album of the Year from Uncut magazine and the Chicago Tribune. The band achieved even more recognition after releasing their Cherry Tree EP, which included popular tracks such as “All the Wine” and “About Today.” The EP caught the ear of the band The Walkmen, and The National went on a successful tour with them.
