The Groundlings is an improv and sketch comedy theatre located in Los Angeles that has been around since 1974. Gary Austin founded the theatre and they are a non-profit organization. The Groundlings has seen the likes of now famous celebrities such as Will Ferrell, Kristen Wiig, Lisa Kudrow, Cheryl Hines, Jon Lovitz, Will Forte, Maya Rudolph, Kathy Griffin, Chris Parnell, and Phil Hartman all of whom are alumnis. When the organization started there were only 50 people and they would put together skits for the show and then perform the best ones on the weekend. Soon after, Lily Tomlin was coming to see the show and Lorne Michaels would come and cast the members for Saturday Night Live. They were soon getting more and more buzz and hype and the members grew from 50 to 90 and they started asking for people to audition before they could join. In 1979 The Groundlings started a School. A few years down the line The Sunday Company was started to give the talent in school more to work on. The Main Company decides who moves from the school, to The Sunday Company. From there, The Main Company decides again, who moves on from The Sunday Company onto becoming a Groundling. They still hold these rules currently, and make sure they pick the best of the best to become a Groundling. .
