The music of Idles has been classified as punk rock and many subgenres that are closely related to it, such as post-punk, hardcore punk, and post-hardcore. The band issued the single "The Beachland Ballroom" on September 28, 2021, just over a year after the release of "Ultra Mono," which came out on September 28, 2020. At the same time that the announcement was made, the band also announced that they will be releasing their fourth studio album, titled "Crawler," later on in the fall. The second single, titled "Car Crash," was made available for purchase before the album was made public. This song was inspired by a real-life vehicle accident that occurred to Talbot.
