Shamila Kohestani is an Afghani professional footballer who was the former captain of the Afghanistan women’s national football team. Kohestani was born in Kabul, Afghanistan, and while growing up, she had a hard childhood growing up under the Taliban rule. Kohestani used football as a release and after the Taliban was removed from power she began playing football and worked alongside the Afghan Football Federation to establish the first Afghan Women’s National Football Team, which she was named captain of. She began her career playing as a forward at Blair Academy in Blairstown, New Jersey, which she was able to do through a football clinic hosted by Afghan Youth Sports Exchange. While there, she scored six goals for their first tournament, and where she also won the Arthur Ashe Courage Award.
