Sister Souljah is an American author, activist, recording artist, and film producer who is best known for her criticism of Bill Clinton’s remarks about race in the United States during his presidential campaign. Souljah was born in Bronx, New York, and she has earned her B.A. in American History and African Studies from Rutgers University. She has also taken a study abroad program at University of Salamanca and an advanced studies program at Cornell University. Since a young age, Souljah noticed that schools weren’t teaching history of African origins of civilization and that schools left out teaching on Black history, art, and culture. As a teenager, Souljah earned honors such as the American Legion’s Constitutional Oratory Contest, which led her to take Cornell University’s Advanced Summer Program. She also had been a legislative intern in the House of Representatives. After earning her degree, Souljah went on to work with Reverend Benjamin Chavis of the United Church of Christ Commission for Racial Justice where she would develop, organize and finance various programs. She has also been organizer of the National African Youth-Student Alliance.
