Judy Richardson is an American activist, filmmaker, and lecturer from Tarrytown, New York. Richardson went on to study at Swarthmore College where she joined the Swarthmore Political Action Committee, which is a Students for a Democratic Society affiliate. Her work led to her joining the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee where she worked in projects in Alabama and Georgia. She also worked as office manager for Julian Bond’s first campaign for the George House of Representatives. She also helped to organize a Freedom School. Richardson alongside other SNCC staffers went on to found the Drum and Spear Bookstore in Washington, D.C., which went on to be the largest African-American bookstore in the United States. While there, she was the children’s editor and also wrote an essay which was published in Howard University’s Journal of Negro Education. As a filmmaker and producer, Richardson has worked on the series “Eyes on the Prize,” co-produced the documentary “Malcolm X: Make It Plain,” produced the documentary “Scarred Justice: Orangeburg Massacre,” and more..
