Songhoy Blues is a desert blues band from Bamako, Mali, that consists of members Garba Toure, Aliou Toure, Oumar Toure, and Nathanael Dembele. The group was formed in Timbuktu, but have since had to leave Timbuktu due to the civil conflict and imposition of Sharia law. Together, the members formed together in Bamako to try to recreate what they lost after being forced to leave their homes and want all of their fellow refugees to feel something when they play. Songhoy Blues began playing in Bamako where they grew a large amount of fans from where they were from. They were then noticed by the non-profit, Africa Express, which led to them recorded the single “Soubour” with guitarist Nick Zinner of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs. Their single became successful and from there, Songhoy Blues went on to record their debut album, “Music in Exile,” which was released in North America and earned positive reviews from outlets such as NME, Metacritic, and The Guardian. Since then, Songhoy Blues have gone on to tour with Alabama Shakes, Julian Casablancas, and have performed at festivals such as Glastonbury Festival, Bonnaroo Festival, Austin City Limits, and more. They have also gone on to release their second album, “Resistance.”.
