GZA, also known as The Genius, is an American rapper and songwriter who is best known for being a founding member of the hip-hop group, the Wu-Tang Clan. GZA found his love for hip-hop at a young age after attending block parties and from there, he began working as a DJ and also found himself involved in breakdancing and graffiti. He then began writing and learning rhymes which led to him writing raps. He later formed a group with his cousins, the two of which later became known as RZA and Ol’ Dirty Bastard. GZA would perform in rap battles with his cousins and he later was signed as a solo artist under the name The Genius. As a solo artist, GZA released his debut album, “Words from the Genius,” which didn’t get attention as his label didn’t promote it, which led to GZA asking to be released from the label he was signed to. Shortly after, GZA joined the Wu-Tang Clan, which was formed by his cousin RZA. As a solo artist, GZA went on to release five more solo albums which his most popular being “Liquid Swords,” which peaked at number 9 on the US Billboard charts and earned RIAA certified platinum and BPI certified silver, and “Beneath the Surface,” which peaked at number 9 on the US Billboard charts and earned RIAA certified gold. Some of GZA’s most popular solo singles include “Liquid Swords,” “Cold World,” “Shadowboxin,” and “Breaker, Breaker.”.
