David Shula is an American football coach and former professional football player. Shula was born in Lexington, Kentucky, and is the son of Pro Football Hall of Fame coach Don Shula, and is the brother of Mike Shula. Shula began his career playing high school football in Florida and also excelled at playing baseball in high school. Shula went on to play college football at Dartmouth College and after earning his degree, he went undrafted in the NFL draft but was later signed as a free agent by the Baltimore Colts. Shula had a short career in the NFL and only played one season as a wide receiver and punt returner. After leaving the NFL, Shula went on to begin his career as a coach first working as a wide receivers coach for the NFL team the Miami Dolphins and then also working as the quarterbacks coach. Shula worked with the Dolphins for six years before joining the Dallas Cowboys as the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach. He only stayed with the Cowboys for a year before joining the Cincinnati Bengals as first the wide receivers coach, and then was promoted to head coach. After working as head coach for four years, Shula left coaching for several years to work with his family’s steakhouse business.
