David Kopay is an American former professional football running back who played in the NFL and was known for being one of the first professional athletes to come out as gay. Kopay was born in Chicago, Illinois, and he began his career playing football in high school before going on to play college football at the University of Washington where he played in the All-America East vs. West Football Game. After graduating from college, Kopay went on to go undrafted but was later signed by the San Francisco 49ers as a free agent. After playing for the 49ers for a few years, Kopay went on to play for the Detroit Lions, Washington Redskins, New Orleans Saints, and the Green Bay Packers. Kopay finished his NFL career with 876 rushing yards, 3.7 average, and 3 touchdowns.
