Batch was born in Homestead, Pennsylvania, and he began his career playing high school football before going on to play college football at Eastern Michigan where he also earned a degree in criminal justice and was a first-team All-MAC. Batch went on to be selected in the second round of the NFL draft by the Detroit Lions. Batch played with the Lions for three years before spending the rest of his NFL career with the Pittsburgh Steelers.
