James was born in Immokalee, Florida, and he began his career playing football in high school where he was recruited to play for the University of Miami. While playing with the University of Miami, James ranked third in all-time rushing yards, was the only running back in the school’s history to post 2 consecutive seasons with 1,000-plus rushing yards and ranked first in school history with the most 100-plus rushing games at 14. He was also a first-team All-Big East and has been inducted into the University of Miami Sports Hall of Fame.
