Lapointe was born in Ville St. Pierre, Quebec, and he began his career playing for the Lac St-Louis Lions in the QMAAA before going on to play for the Laval Titan of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League. Lapointe was then selected 10th overall in the NHL entry draft by the Detroit Red Wings and went on to first play for the Adirondack Red Wings in the AHL before eventually being called up to play for the Red Wings. During his time playing with the Detroit Red Wings, Lapointe helped them to win two Stanley Cup championships. From there, he went on to play for teams such as the Boston Bruins, Chicago Blackhawks, and Ottawa Senators. Apart from playing in the NHL, Lapointe has also played for Team Canada in the World Junior Championships as well as in the World Championships. Since retiring, Lapointe has gone on to be a pro scout for the Chicago Blackhawks and then was also Director of Player Development for the Montreal Canadiens..
