Smith was born in Sherman, Texas, and he began his career playing football in high school where he was a letterman and a two-time Texas All-State selection. Smith went on to play college football at University of Notre Dame where he was a Football News All-Independent first-team. He went on to be selected in the seventh round of the NFL Draft by the Indianapolis Colts. Smith spent almost the entirety of his 11 year NFL career with the Colts and during his time there, he was on the PFW/PFWA All-Rookie Team, was a Super Bowl champion, an AFC special teams player of the week and a two-time AFC special team player of the month. After playing with the Colts for 9 years, Smith spent the rest of his NFL career playing for the Washington Redskins. Apart from his career in the NFL, Smith has been a member of the band Connersvine as well as lead singer of The Hunter Smith Band.
