Dr. Robert Sapolsky is an American neuroendocrinology researcher and author who is currently the Professor of Biology, Professor of Neurology and Neurological Sciences at Stanford University. Sapolsky was born in Brooklyn, New York, and he has earned his B.A. in biological anthropology summa cum laude from Harvard University. After earning his degree, Sapolsky went on to study baboons in the wild in Kenya. After studying the social behaviors of baboons for a few years, Sapolsky moved to New York where he earned his Ph.D. in neuroendocrinology at Rockefeller University where he also began working with Bruce McEwen. After his studies in Kenya, Sapolsky would go every summer for about 20 years to study the same group of baboons to record their behavior and how it changed. Through his work, Sapolsky has done research on stress and neuronal degeneration, gene therapy, gene transfer techniques, and more. His work has been featured in outlets which include The New York Times, Wired, Stanford magazine, National Geographic, The Tehran Times, and more. He has previously earned a MacArthur Fellowship Genius Grant for his work, the National Science Foundation Presidential Young Investigator Award, and the John P. McGovern Award for Behavioral Science which was awarded by the American Association for the Advancement of Science.
