Al Iaftrate got his start playing hockey as a kid in 1979, during the Quebec International Pee-Wee Hockey Tournament alongside a minor Detroit hockey team. In 1984, he was selected as fourth overall in the NHL Entry Draft by the Toronto Maple Leafs. Al played for Team USA as the Winter Olympics that same year in Sarajevo, Yugoslavia. Amazingly, Al scored a 105.2-mile-per-hour slapshot during the Skills Competition. He later played for the Boston Bruins, the San Jose Sharks, and the Carolina Hurricanes. Overall, Al played about 800 NHL games, scored a total of 152 goals, 311 assists, along with 1301 penalty minutes..
