Since Reich and Lowe first connected in 2013 at Madame Claude's, a former brothel turned bar in Berlin, Germany, VOLK has gone a long way. Both Lowe and Reich used songwriting as a creative outlet while pursuing their respective degrees in theater and teaching at international schools, respectively. One fateful Sunday, Reich was singing the blues and Lowe was playing slide guitar as they each tried out their original compositions at Madame Claude's open mic night. The tunes finally cried out for more than their first folk-inspired acoustic collaboration could provide. For a month, they had a drummer, but when he left town and left a drum set in their flat, Lowe had an idea and requested Reich to try playing the discarded drums.
