American noise punk band Empath is from Philadelphia. Garrett Koloski (drums), Jem Shanahan (synthesiser), and Catherine Elicson (guitar/vocals) make up the current lineup (drums). They are now signed to Fat Possum Records and have one album and multiple EPs to their credit. In 2015, while the three were Philadelphia housemates, Catherine Elicson, Jem Shanahan, and Garrett Koloski founded Empath. Elicson was a member of the bands Goners and Katherine when she was living in Columbus, Ohio. At the time, Koloski played drums for the Syracuse, New York band Perfect Pussy. The group recorded Volumes 1 and 2 of Crystal Reality.

In 2016, they started recording Liberating Guilt and Fear with Shaun Sutkus, a former bandmate of Koloski's. Coon joined in 2017, and that fall he recorded his parts. In 2018, Get Better Records finally released it after having it professionally mastered by Greg Saunier of Deerhoof. In honor of Irv Teibel's Environments album series from the 1970s, they issued a 7" that same year.

Through Get Better Records once more, the band released its debut LP Active Listening: Night on Earth in 2018. After receiving a favorable response, they signed with Fat Possum Records, who released the record right away along with the first vinyl pressing of Liberating Guilt and Fear.

Empath announced in late 2021 that Visitor, their second album, will be released on February 11th, 2022..
