From her first recorded performance as the lead vocalist with the renowned traditional Celtic group DeDannan to her long-term collaborations with Nashville artists Jerry Douglas, Bela Fleck and others, Maura O'Connell has combined an unmistakably deep, rich and versatile voice with her signature talent for finding what's most potent in the work of a wide range of genre-hopping songwriters in order to pull the audience right along with her. She was the third of four singing sisters and was born and nurtured in County Clare, Ireland. However, her family's home was saturated with opera and parlor song records rather than traditional Celtic music. The more experienced Maura O'Connell sounds more confident than ever before, totally prepared to lead us on that journey to the center of the song one more time, even if her vast musical interests have largely remained steady throughout the course of her 20+ year recording career.
O'Connell joined the Sugar Hill label as the millennium neared and started working on her seventh album. Walls & Windows, which included songs by Patty Griffin, Van Morrison, Steve Earle and John Prine, was produced by Ray Kennedy rather than O'Connell's longstanding collaborator Jerry Douglas. Kennedy has also collaborated with Steve Earle and Lucinda Williams. Her CD, Don't I Know, featured a variety of musical instruments, including lap steel, clavinets, fiddles and B-3 organ.
Naked With Friends is Maura's debut a cappella recording. Mary Black, Paul Brady, Moya Brennan, Jerry Douglas, Alison Krauss, Mairéad N'Mhaonaigh, Tim O'Brien, Dolly Parton, Sarah Dugas, Kate Rusby and Darrell Scott are just a few of the special guests who sang on it.
