Board of Education and was the first African-American Associate Justice of the US Supreme Court. John specializes in motivational speeches about his father's place in American history and his contribution to the nation's civil rights movement. Additionally, he has spoken at various events connected to law enforcement and fire and rescue. Marshall, a New York City native, joined the Virginia State Police in 1980 as a Trooper to start his career in government service and law enforcement. He was chosen by President William J. Clinton to hold the position of United States Marshal for Virginia's Eastern District in 1994. Marshall was proposed by President Clinton for the position of Director of the US Marshals Service in 1999. In November 1999, Marshall began serving as the Director after being approved by the US Senate. He is the organization's first African-American Director. Marshall was chosen to serve as Virginia's Secretary of Public Safety in 2002 by Governor Mark Warner. Governor Timothy Kaine reappointed him to that position in 2006. Marshall has served in Virginia's Cabinet for the longest period of time. Marshall worked as a consultant and senior advisor for the Thurgood Marshall College Fund from January 2010 until January 2011. Marshall has a Georgetown University BA in Government and a Virginia Commonwealth University Post-Baccalaureate Certificate in the Administration of Justice. He also holds degrees from the Henry Toll Fellowship Program and the Federal Executive Institute..
