Born and raised in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, Pat O'Brien earned his diploma from Washington High School. O'Brien graduated with a degree in government from the University of South Dakota, where he was a brother of the fraternity Delta Tau Delta. At the Paul H. Nitze School of Advanced International Studies at Johns Hopkins University in Washington, D.C., he later got a master's degree in international economics. O'Brien was a member of the rock and roll group Dale Gregory and the Shouters, which earned him entry into the South Dakota Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
In his hometown of Sioux Falls, where KSOO TV-Radio is located, O'Brien began his professional career. He was a production assistant for The Huntley-Brinkley Report and a researcher at NBC News in Washington, D.C., following his graduation from college. Later, he worked as a reporter and anchor for WMAQ-TV in Chicago. He relocated to Los Angeles' KNXT-TV (now KCBS-TV), where he won four regional Emmy Awards.
