A British punk duo called Big Joanie was established in London in 2013. Chardine Taylor-Stone, Estella Adeyeri, and Stephanie Phillips (guitar and vocals) make up the group (drums and vocals). After a few singles and EPs, they published their debut album, Daydream Library Series by Thurston Moore and Eva Prinz, in 2018. Since then, they have signed with Kill Rock Stars in the United States. Stephanie Phillips founded Big Joanie in 2013 after becoming dissatisfied with the lack of intersectionality in the scene. Phillips had advertised online, looking for musicians with whom to launch a black feminist punk band. Both the original bassist of the band, Kiera Coward-Deyell, and Chardine Taylor-Stone, whom Phillips had met through Imkaan, responded. At the first-ever Debut Timers, all the bands had to be brand-new, the majority of the members had to be learning new instruments, and they had to include a member of a marginalized group, they performed their first set. The band self-released a 7" three-song single titled "Crooked Room" in 2016 on their own Sistah Punk Records after releasing their debut EP "Sistah Punk" on Tuff Enuff Records in 2014. The title track was influenced by a presentation by author Melissa Harris-Perry, who contrasted trying to identify a genuine vertical in a room where everything is crooked to living as a black woman in a white patriarchy..
