"Wordgirl" Jensen McRae says, "Everything I do is about, and in service of, words and stories." McRae's music tackles many facets of identity, from race to concerns of despair and unrequited love, as a bi-racial, black and Jewish lady growing up. Inspired by artists like Stevie Wonder, Carole King, Alicia Keys and James Taylor, McRae began writing songs in her bedroom and eventually joined the Los Angeles local songwriting scene.
As a high school student who attended Grammy Camp, McRae was awarded a full scholarship to the USC Thornton School of Music, where she earned a bachelor's degree in Popular Music.
Her distinctive singing style and lyrics drew the eye of her soon-to-be manager as she was finishing her senior year, who connected the young musician with Grammy Award-winning producer Rahki (Eminem, Kendrick Lamar). Every week, the two of them worked in the studio to finish her debut record. McRae posted a little video clip on Twitter of herself singing "a preemptive cover" of a song written by Phoebe Bridgers. The video received over 2.5 million views and even attracted Bridgers' attention.
The video was then released as a single with the name "Immune" as a result of the widespread attention and admiration. She has received recognition from publications like Wonderland, Vulture and Fader. She was also named one of NPR Slingshot's Musicians To Watch and KCRW's best emerging artists..
